Asbestos And Lung Cancer; Partners In Crime

Asbestos and lung cancer seem to go hand in hand.  Let us address what asbestos is.  Asbestos is a group of natural minerals that are separated into tiny thin threads.  The threads, being resistant to chemicals and fire, had been previously used in many industries.

While this is very helpful for the industrial world, the use of asbestos can be very dangerous to a person exposed to it for any substantial length of time.  If a person breaths in asbestos particles that are floating around in the air, those particles could get trapped in the lung causing damages in the lung.  They remain there indefinitely and can cause severe damage, including over time, cancer.  The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and EPA consider asbestos to be a carcinogen, meaning a cancer causing agent.  This is why we consider asbestos and lung cancer partners in crime.

Typically starting in the bronchi, lung cancer usually develops at a slow rate and can spread to other parts of the body.  Other parts of the body that can be affected are the trachea, alveoli and bronchioles.  From these areas, gone untreated, the cancer could spread throughout the body.

There are essentially two types of lung cancer, the non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and the small cell lung cancer (SCLC).  Small cell lung cancer is just like you would think, containing small cells.  According to the American Cancer Society, there is a higher rate of non-small cell lung cancer in cancer patients than small cell lung cancer.  Asbestos and lung cancer are thought to be synonomous.

Some patients develop a rare cancer called mesothelioma.  This cancer affects the protective sack found around the body's organs.  This protective sack is called the mesothelium and covers the body's organs so that they are able to move around, such as when your heart beats, without getting stuck on other parts of your internal body.  When the cancer called mesothelioma attacks the sack it spreads throughout.  Mesothelioma is believed to affect not only those exposed to asbestos on a regular basis but also their immediate family or people they spend a great deal of time with.

Asbestos is considered such a hazard and the chance of asbestos and lung cancer so high that when construction is being performed on a building containing asbestos and asbestos products, an asbestos removal service is typically brought in to do the job.  They remove things such as asbestos ceiling tiles and asbestos floor tile removal.  These professionals wear protective masks and gear to help prevent against the dangers of asbestos.  Asbestos removal cost is not inexpensive by any means.  These services charge for the risks that their workers take.
If you believe that you or your family members have mesothelioma and you believe that it is due to job related hazards you can seek the help of an attorney who has experience in mesothelioma settlement to help with your medical bills.

Asbestos and lung cancer are two peas in a pod and help should be found immediately if you believe you have been exposed.  There are a number of tests your physician can run to eliminate the possibility of cancer.  Waiting will only worsen the condition.
